Summarize this blog post with:

We analyzed 22,295 AI answers across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode to test one of the most common assumptions in AI-visibility strategy. When an AI engine cites a Reddit thread in an answer about a brand, does that thread actually name the brand?

The dataset covers 115,843 citation events, 460 distinct B2B prompts, and 37 tracked organizations. For this piece we look at the subset of citations that landed on a reddit.com URL and where our enrichment layer confirmed whether the cited page named the focal brand. That gives us 859 Reddit source instances with a known page-mention flag, out of 879 total deduplicated Reddit source instances in the dataset.

Here are the questions we set out to answer:

  • When AI cites Reddit in an answer, does the cited Reddit thread name the brand the answer is about?
  • Which subreddits are AI engines actually pulling from in B2B answers?
  • What are the practical implications for a Reddit community strategy?
  • How does this reconcile with industry pieces telling marketers to invest heavily in Reddit for AI visibility?
  • What is the right way to think about Reddit as a channel for AI citations versus AI mentions?

Only 4.1% of cited Reddit pages actually named the focal brand. The other 96% were cited for topical value alone. The AI engine used the Reddit thread as a source about the category, the workflow, or the problem, but not as evidence that the brand should be named in the response. That means the widely repeated advice to “seed branded discussion on Reddit so AI engines cite it” is measuring the wrong outcome. Getting the AI to cite Reddit and getting the AI to name your brand in the same answer are two different jobs.

TL;DR

  • When AI cites Reddit for a B2B brand, does the Reddit thread mention that brand? Only 4.1% of the time. Measured across 859 Reddit source instances with a known page-mention flag.
  • What is the total Reddit citation volume in the dataset? 879 deduplicated instances across the three engines, distributed roughly evenly. ChatGPT cited Reddit 391 times, Perplexity 269 times, Google AI Mode 218 times.
  • What kind of Reddit URLs do AI engines cite? Individual post/discussion threads almost exclusively (99.7% for ChatGPT, 100% for Perplexity, 100% for Google AI Mode). No subreddit index pages, no user profiles, no Reddit search pages.
  • Which subreddits get cited most in B2B answers? r/digitalmarketing (61 instances), r/sales (52), r/saas (28), r/productmarketing (29), r/b2bmarketing (20), r/b2bsaas (19), r/revops (14). Niche B2B communities dominate over the massive general subreddits.
  • What does this mean for Reddit strategy? AI cites Reddit for topical practitioner discussion rather than brand endorsement. Building a specific branded Reddit thread rarely produces a direct AI citation of that thread. Being genuinely useful in the practitioner communities AI already reads produces more indirect visibility.

When AI Cites Reddit for Your Brand, the Thread Rarely Names You

The core measurement is straightforward. For every Reddit URL that appeared as a citation in an answer about a tracked focal brand, we checked whether the cited Reddit page actually mentioned that brand somewhere in its content.

Metric Value
Total Reddit citation instances (deduplicated by answer-URL) 879
Instances with a known page-mention flag 859
Instances where cited page named the focal brand 35
Brand-on-page rate 4.1%

That 4.1% rate has a specific interpretation. It does not mean that only 4.1% of Reddit threads are useful, or that Reddit is a low-value channel. It means that when AI engines cite Reddit in a B2B answer about a specific brand, the Reddit thread they cite is usually a general discussion of the category or workflow, and the brand’s name does not appear on the page. The AI is using the thread as evidence about the topic. The brand name typically comes from a different source in the same answer.

That is a very different mental model from the one most Reddit-strategy articles operate on. The common pitch is that if a brand is discussed favorably on Reddit, AI engines will cite those threads and the brand mention will flow through into the AI answer. Our data says that pathway is rare in B2B. The AI is much more likely to cite a Reddit thread that discusses the general problem your product solves and then name your brand from somewhere else, or to cite the Reddit thread without naming any brand at all.

What AI Engines Actually Do with Reddit

We looked at the URL type of every cited Reddit link.

Engine Post / discussion thread Other Reddit page Total Reddit citations
ChatGPT 391 1 392
Perplexity 269 0 269
Google AI Mode 218 0 218

Individual discussion threads make up essentially all of the Reddit citations across the three engines. AI engines are not citing subreddit index pages, user profiles, or search results. They are pulling one specific thread at a time.

That format constraint tells you something about what makes a citable Reddit thread. It has to be a discussion thread with a clear topic, a question in the title that matches a query pattern, and enough substantive replies to give the AI something to summarize. Threads that are single-post announcements, memes, or news pastes do not fit this pattern. Threads that are twenty replies of practitioners answering a question do.

The most-cited subreddits in our dataset reflect this. The top 20 subreddits by citation instance are almost all niche B2B or vertical-specific communities.

Subreddit Citation instances Prompts Organizations
r/digitalmarketing 61 11 3
r/sales 52 4 2
r/beleggen (Dutch investing) 43 10 2
r/fancyfollicles 36 9 3
r/hairstylist 30 5 1
r/productmarketing 29 3 1
r/saas 28 10 5
r/geo__ai__seo 25 4 3
r/gtmengineering 22 4 1
r/b2bmarketing 20 6 3
r/b2bsaas 19 3 2
r/crm 16 4 2
r/hubspot 14 4 2
r/revops 14 6 2
r/socialmediamarketing 14 2 2

The pattern is that AI engines are pulling from small, focused, practitioner-driven communities. The huge general subreddits like r/technology or r/programming barely appear. That matches how a marketer should think about Reddit strategy. Being active in three niche subreddits that map directly to your buyer persona is worth more than being active in the massive general subreddits that get more traffic but produce weaker AI-citation signal.

Why Reddit Citations Rarely Name the Brand

The 4.1% brand-on-page rate is not a Reddit quirk. It reflects how AI engines actually use forum content when they build answers.

The mechanism is that AI engines break a query into a topical component and a brand-comparison component. When a buyer asks “best CRM for enterprise sales teams,” the AI decomposes that into questions about what makes a CRM enterprise-ready, how sales teams use CRMs, what specific vendors exist, and what real users say about them. The Reddit thread cited is usually answering one of the first three questions. The vendor names come from a different set of sources, often the AI’s training data or a review platform citation, or both.

That decomposition explains why brand-mention rates on Reddit citations are so low. The Reddit thread was pulled in to answer “how do enterprise sales teams use CRMs,” which is a question that does not require any brand name to answer. The AI then combines the practitioner insight from the Reddit thread with brand names it retrieves separately, producing a synthesized answer that reads as if the Reddit thread endorsed those brands. It usually did not.

For a marketer, this reframes what “Reddit for AI visibility” actually looks like. Getting AI engines to cite Reddit threads about your specific brand is a much narrower goal than getting AI engines to cite Reddit threads about your category. The category-level citation is easier to earn and shows up more often, but it may or may not carry a brand mention. The brand-level citation carries the mention but is rare.

How This Compares to Other Public Studies

Reddit’s role in AI citations has been studied a lot in the last twelve months, and the published numbers vary wildly. Our finding sits at a very specific angle that most published studies have not measured. Here is how it fits.

Tinuiti reported Q1 2026 data showing ChatGPT cites Reddit in more than 5% of responses and Perplexity draws 31% of its citations from social media with Reddit dominant, while Gemini cites Reddit in just 0.1% of responses. Their engine-level incidence numbers are compatible with ours (ChatGPT 4.2%, Perplexity 3.6%, Google AI Mode 2.9% in our B2B sample). Tinuiti did not measure whether the cited Reddit threads actually named the brand the answer was about. That is the layer our 4.1% brand-on-page rate adds. The incidence data alone tells a marketer that AI cites Reddit. It does not tell them whether the cited threads discuss their brand.

Frase reported that Reddit accounts for 46.5% of Perplexity’s citations in their sample. That number sits well above our 3.6% for Perplexity in B2B and above Tinuiti’s 24% for Perplexity Reddit citations. The Frase 46.5% is a share of overall citations weighted heavily by consumer queries where Reddit dominates the answer surface. In our B2B panel, Reddit is a much smaller share. The Frase and Tinuiti numbers are correct for their samples. Our 3.6% is correct for a B2B panel. If your category is B2B SaaS, plan against 3 to 5%. If your category is consumer, plan against 20 to 46%.

Peec AI analyzed 30 million sources across five AI engines and ranked Reddit as the single most-cited domain across all AI engines, ahead of YouTube, LinkedIn, and Wikipedia. Their ranking is compatible with ours in the sense that Reddit is a major cited domain. In our B2B dataset, Reddit shows up in 797 answers across all three engines combined, which puts it firmly in the top 12 broadest domains we identified in our earlier top-domains piece. But being a top-cited domain is separate from the citation carrying a brand mention. Peec’s ranking tells a marketer that Reddit matters as a source. Our brand-on-page finding tells them what happens when they get the citation.

Yext published research showing that 86% of AI citations come from brand-managed sources across 6.8 million citations. That number sits at the opposite end from the Reddit-heavy studies. Yext’s finding leans on a specific definition of “brand-managed” that includes official websites, listings, and directory profiles. If you exclude community platforms from that count, the remaining share is dominated by the domains marketers can control. Our data does not contradict Yext. It adds a nuance. Reddit is a real slice of the citation ecosystem, but the mention layer of a Reddit citation is not something the brand controls the way it controls a listing or an owned page.

OtterlyAI reported that community platforms (Reddit and Quora) capture 52.5% of AI citations versus 47.5% for brand domains. That is closer to the Reddit-heavy view of the ecosystem and sits well above our B2B share. The disagreement between Yext’s 86% brand-managed number and OtterlyAI’s 52.5% community-share number reflects both different sample compositions and different definitions of what counts as brand-managed. In B2B specifically, our 3 to 4% Reddit incidence and the 4.1% brand-on-page rate together suggest that the community-versus-brand debate is a poor frame for B2B decisions. In B2B, Reddit is a topical source the AI uses to summarize categories. Treating it as a brand-endorsement layer misreads how the citations get used.

The pattern across all four studies is consistent once you separate consumer from B2B, and citation incidence from brand-on-page rate. Consumer-heavy datasets show Reddit as 20% to 47% of citations. B2B datasets show Reddit as 3% to 5%. And essentially no study has measured the brand-on-page rate on cited Reddit threads until now. That is where the 4.1% number changes the strategy.

What This Means for How You Approach Reddit

Three things follow from the 4.1% brand-on-page rate.

The first is that a “get talked about on Reddit” campaign does not directly translate to “get named in AI answers.” If your goal is a brand mention in a ChatGPT or Perplexity answer, seeding a branded Reddit thread is a low-yield tactic. The AI is unlikely to cite the specific thread that names your brand, and even if it does, the mention on Reddit does not always survive the AI’s synthesis. The mechanism you can actually influence is much broader. You want the practitioner communities that discuss your category to have accurate, current, useful discussion, so that when AI cites those communities as topical sources, the answer that gets built around those citations has good raw material.

The second is that the target subreddits are much narrower than a “get on Reddit” strategy usually implies. In our dataset, the top-cited B2B subreddits are r/digitalmarketing, r/sales, r/saas, r/productmarketing, r/b2bmarketing, r/b2bsaas, r/revops, r/hubspot, and r/crm. These are small, focused communities of practitioners. The huge general subreddits do not show up in the B2B citation pool. If you are running a Reddit presence for AI visibility in B2B, three or four niche practitioner subreddits are the whole target list. Broader activity is wasted.

The third is that the measurement dashboard needs to split “Reddit citation rate” from “Reddit brand-mention rate.” These are the same measurement in traditional SEO because a page cited on Google is a page a reader can see. In AI search they are different measurements. A cited Reddit thread is not the same as a named brand, and reporting only the citation rate hides the strategy question. The Citation Analytics view breaks out both dimensions per tracked prompt, so a marketer can see whether the Reddit citations they earn actually carry brand mentions or whether the brand is being named from a different source in the same answer.

The Bigger Story

The industry has spent 2025 and 2026 telling B2B marketers that Reddit is the top AI-citation surface and that seeding branded Reddit content is the shortest path to AI visibility. Our data says the first half is partly right for some categories and the second half is mostly wrong for most B2B categories. Reddit does show up as a citation source. But 96% of the Reddit threads that get cited do not name the brand the answer is about, so the citation does not carry the brand mention it is often assumed to carry.

That finding is compatible with our earlier work on the same dataset. In the YouTube and Reddit piece, we showed that Reddit citation incidence is roughly balanced across the three engines at 3 to 4%. In the top-domains piece, we showed that no single domain covers more than a small fraction of citations. And in the cross-engine consensus piece, we showed that engines pull from different source pools even when they arrive at similar brand conclusions. Put together, the picture is that Reddit is one of many topical sources AI engines use, that it is not disproportionately powerful in B2B, and that a Reddit citation is a signal about the topic rather than about the brand.

The right way to think about Reddit for B2B AI visibility is as a topical presence in a small number of practitioner communities. Be genuinely useful in the three or four subreddits your buyers actually read. Answer questions in the discussion patterns AI engines are most likely to summarize. Do not seed branded threads expecting AI to cite them. Do not treat Reddit citation rate as the KPI. Treat it as one supporting layer of a broader answer engine optimization approach where citation and mention are measured separately.

The rest of this State of AI Search series unpacks the other structural patterns we found in the same dataset. Later pieces look at how mention density varies across the three engines, how cited-page sentiment relates to AI-answer sentiment, and how prompt phrasing changes the probability that your brand is named in the response.

The finding to hold onto from this piece is the simple one. When AI cites Reddit in a B2B answer about your brand, the Reddit thread names your brand 4% of the time. Plan the Reddit strategy for topical presence in practitioner communities. Track citation rate and brand-mention rate as two separate metrics.

This research was conducted using Analyze AI, which tracks brand visibility, citation share, and per-page brand mention flags across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, and every other major AI engine.
