What this list actually tells us

Most data studies stop at the table. Three patterns in this one are worth pulling out, because each one has a content implication you can act on this week.

Google has become a calculator, a clock, and a translator
Google has become a calculator, a clock, and a translator

Look at how many of the U.S. top 100 are utility queries. There are eighteen unit conversions (“how many ounces in a gallon”, “how many cups in a quart”, “how many feet in a mile”), four time queries (“what time is it”, “what day is it”, “what holiday is today”), and a dozen calendar lookups for upcoming holidays. Together, that’s nearly 40% of the list.

These queries don’t really want a webpage. They want an answer. Google knows this and answers most of them directly in a featured snippet, a knowledge panel, or an instant answer module. Ranking for them as a publisher is mostly a brand-awareness play, since the click-through rate is already in the single digits before AI Overviews even appear.

The implication is simple. If you’re chasing high-volume informational keywords, screen them for instant-answer behaviour first. A query that Google answers itself is a poor traffic bet, even at a million searches per month. Our SERP checker will show you exactly which SERP features the query triggers before you commit a brief to it.

Year-bound queries refresh every January

Ten of the U.S. top 100 are year-bound (“when is mother’s day 2026”, “when is the super bowl 2026”, “when is daylight savings 2026”). The volume on these queries collapses to almost zero by December and rebuilds the following year against a new keyword string.

This is a clean evergreen content opportunity hiding in plain sight. One page, refreshed each January with the new dates and the new year in the URL slug or H1, can dominate the same keyword family for years. The mistake most teams make is treating the 2026 version as a brand-new article, which fragments authority across multiple URLs. Update in place, change the slug only if absolutely necessary, and let the page accrue links and history.

AI-related queries have entered the top 100, but their volume is still tiny

For the first time, we see “what is ai”, “how to use chatgpt”, “how to use ai”, “what is grok”, and “what is sora” in the global top 100. That’s notable. But “what is ai” globally still only does 673,000 monthly searches. “What is today” does twenty times that.

The signal isn’t volume. It’s growth rate. AI-related queries are the only category in the top 100 with consistent month-over-month growth. Everything else is flat or seasonal. The teams who treat these as low-volume curiosities will be late. The teams who build out their AI explainer content now will own these terms when they 5x in 2027.

How to find the most asked questions in your niche

The list above is fun, but the practical version is the one for your own niche. Here are three methods that work, ordered from quickest to deepest.

Method 1: Pull questions from a keyword research tool

Every serious keyword tool has a question filter. A quick workflow is in Ahrefs Keywords Explorer, but the same idea works in any tool that exposes search volume data.

Step one. Open the tool and search for a broad seed keyword in your niche. If you sell running shoes, start with “running shoes”. If you run a fintech blog, start with “credit card”. Cast wider than you think.

Ahrefs Keywords Explorer search bar with the seed keyword “running shoes” entered, showing the main dashboard with KD, volume, and matching terms count

Step two. Go to the Matching Terms report. Toggle the Questions filter at the top. The list will collapse from millions of keywords to a few thousand actual questions.

Ahrefs Matching Terms report with Questions tab toggled on, showing a list of question keywords with their search volumes

Step three. Sort by search volume descending. Skim the first 100 rows. The questions that appear repeatedly across slight phrasing variants are your real demand pockets.

For a free alternative, our keyword generator tool will surface question variants for any seed term, and our keyword difficulty checker will tell you which ones are realistic to target.

Method 2: Mine Google’s own suggestion data

Google tells you exactly what people ask if you know where to look. Three places matter.

The first is Google Suggest. Type a question stem into the Google search bar (“how to ”, ”what is ”, “why does ___“) and let autocomplete fill in the rest. Each suggestion is a real query Google has seen people type, ranked by frequency.

The second is People Also Ask. Search any seed keyword and scroll to the People Also Ask box. Click any question and Google expands two or three more. Click those, and the box keeps growing. We’ve published a full guide on optimizing for People Also Ask in AI Search if you want to go deeper.

The third is the “Related searches” block at the bottom of any SERP. Less rich than PAA, but it surfaces sibling queries you’d never have brainstormed.

For a structured version of this, AlsoAsked or AnswerThePublic both visualize the same data in tree form. Free tier is enough for most needs.

AnswerThePublic visualization with the radial “questions” wheel populated for a sample seed keyword

Method 3: Find the questions people are asking AI engines

Here’s the part that no one was talking about two years ago. The questions people ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini are not the same questions they ask Google. They’re longer, more specific, and more comparison-heavy. “Best CRM for a 5-person sales team that integrates with QuickBooks” is a perfectly normal Perplexity prompt and a terrible Google query.

If you want to know what your buyers are asking AI engines about your category, you need a tool that listens to AI answer engines directly. That’s the gap our product fills.

In Analyze AI’s Prompts module, you set up the prompts that matter for your space, and we run them on a daily cadence across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, and others. You see your visibility, your sentiment, your position, and which competitors get mentioned alongside you. You also see which prompts you’re missing entirely.

Analyze AI Prompts module showing tracked prompts with visibility, sentiment, position, and competitor mentions across AI engines

If you don’t want to set up tracked prompts yet, you can run a one-off check with our Ad Hoc Prompt Searches. Drop in any prompt, pick a region, and see how every major AI engine answers it right now, including which brands they recommend and which sources they cite.

To go from “what prompt should I track” to “what prompts are people actually asking”, use our Prompt Discovery feature. It generates the realistic prompts your buyers are asking AI engines about your category, complete with intent classification.

The other angle is reverse-engineering. Look at the URLs and domains that AI engines cite when they answer prompts in your space. Those are the pages winning AI visibility right now, and the questions they answer are the ones you should be answering too. Our Citation Analytics shows every URL and domain cited across the engines you care about.

Sources view in Analyze AI showing content type breakdown across blogs, websites, reviews, and product pages, plus the top cited domains in a category

The shortcut, if you already have AI traffic, is to look at where it’s landing. Our AI Traffic Analytics breaks down which pages on your site are getting visits from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, and Copilot, and what those visitors do once they arrive.

AI Traffic Analytics dashboard in Analyze AI showing daily visitor counts broken down by AI source over a 30-day period

Pages that are already pulling AI traffic are answering prompts that AI engines like. Find the pattern, then double down on it.

How to actually use this list

Three concrete moves to make this week.

If a question on the U.S. or global list lines up with your category, claim it. Build a thorough answer on the open web, and accept that your job on a million-volume informational query is brand recall, not raw traffic.

If a year-bound holiday or event query lives in your niche, audit your existing page now. Update the year, update the dates, refresh the screenshots, and let the page compound for another twelve months.

If you sell anything where buyers comparison-shop, run your category’s top buying-intent prompts through an AI engine today. Then check whether you appear in the answer. If you don’t, that’s the gap that matters more than your Google ranking on the same query, because the buyer is increasingly going to ask AI first.

SEO is not dead. It’s now one of two organic channels you have to win. The questions people ask haven’t fundamentally changed. The places they ask them have.

If you want to see how your brand is showing up in AI answers across every engine, start a free trial of Analyze AI or book a demo.
